Digital Mammography

Mammography – is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system and high-contrast detector plate for examination of the breast. Most medical experts agree that successful treatment of breast cancer often is linked to early diagnosis. Mammography plays a central part in early detection of breast cancer because it can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them. During mammography the breast is placed on a cassette, compressed with a paddle and exposed to a small dose of radiation to produce an image of internal breast tissue. Compression of the breast is necessary to allow for minimal x-ray dosage and maximum tissue visualization. The initial mammography images are not always enough to determine the existence of a benign or malignant disease with certainty. If a finding or spot seems suspicious, the radiologist may recommend further diagnostic studies.

Digital mammography has been shown to detect significantly (up to 28%) more cancers than film-screen mammography in women who are:
  • 50 and Younger
  • Premenopausal
  • Perimenopausal and
  • Those with dense breasts
